Jiffy Group is a beacon of innovation and sustainability in the global horticulture sector. From its beginnings in Oslo, Norway, to becoming a global leader in plant propagation systems, Jiffy’s journey is a tale of innovation, teamwork, and environmental commitment.

Humble beginnings

The seeds of Jiffy were sown in early 20th century Oslo, Norway. Leif Koxvold, inspired to protect the roots of cabbage transplants, set the stage for Jiffy’s origins in root protection. In 1943, he partnered with Odd Melvold to form Me-Kox Industry, focusing on pressed cellulose fiber products. By 1949, they were developing a root protection system.

Jiffy meets the market

In 1953, the Huminalpot was created, a predecessor of today’s Jiffy pot, allowing plant roots to grow through its walls. Carl Ball from Geo J. Ball Inc. brought it to the US, and by 1955, rebranded as 'Jiffy pots,' they became a resounding success.

Rapid expansion

The 1950s and '60s marked a period of growth. In 1958, the company became A/S Jiffy Pot. With factories in Denmark and later Canada by 1976, Jiffy was producing millions of pots annually. The Jiffy-7 peat pellet, introduced in 1964, became popular in horticultural and forestry applications.

Commitment to sustainability

Jiffy’s dedication to sustainability remains a guiding principle. In the early 2000s, they began working with coir, a sustainable growing medium. A factory opened in Sri Lanka in 2004, producing coir propagation products, which significantly contributed to eco-friendly initiatives. Jiffy-7C coir pellet and products like Jiffy Growbags and Growblocks leveraged coir’s eco-friendly properties.

Becoming Jiffy International

As Jiffy expanded globally, it acquired companies, enhancing its product line and expertise. Acquisitions like Preforma Plant Plugs in 2002 and Tref Groep in 2008 enriched offerings, positioning Jiffy as a leader in quality propagation systems. By 2023, the Botanian brand launch underscored Jiffy’s commitment to serving professional growers and home gardeners alike.

Today, Jiffy provides modern plant propagation with quality, sustainable solutions. With billions of plants started using their systems, Jiffy impacts global horticulture unparalleled.
